Important Change to the IRS Form 1098-T Statement
  • The University of Connecticut will be adjusting the way tuition and fee charges are presented on the annual IRS Form 1098-T statement.  Beginning tax year 2009 your total eligible charges (known as Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses) will be based on the billing date rather than the due date.
  • There will be two main effects resulting from this change:
    1. The first effect is that your Spring 2010 charges will appear on your 2009 statement instead of your 2010 statement.
    2. The second effect is a one-time situation where three semesters (Spring 2009, Fall 2009 and Spring 2010) are all reflected on your 2009 statement instead of the usual two.  Subsequent to this, all statements (beginning in tax year 2010) will again reflect only two semesters.
  • UConn’s Tax Compliance Office has advised us that this change will not jeopardize anyone’s eligibility to claim either the Hope or Lifetime Learning tax credits.  However, the most important consideration will be whether to pay your Spring UConn bill before or after January 1, 2010 as this may or may not affect your eligibility for the credit in tax year 2010.  For this reason it is very important that each family consult with their own tax advisor as to the most advantageous way to take advantage of the tax credit.
  • It is anticipated that your Form 1098-T will be available for downloading and printing through the PeopleSoft Student Administration System in the second half of January.  Forms that are not downloaded by January 31 will be mailed to each student’s home address.  For general questions about this change please feel free to call the UConn Bursar’s Office at (860) 486-4830 or see our Frequently Asked Questions page at www.bursar.uconn.edu/1098t_faq.html.
  • Important Note:  The University of Connecticut does not provide tax advice and makes no representation as to your eligibility to claim either the Hope or Lifetime Learning tax credits. You should not contact UConn for tax advice.  To determine your eligibility for these credits, please contact your tax advisor, Internal Revenue Service or other reliable source.
